Planetnik storm sensing & local warning network
Name origin

Planetnik, a modern form of Płanetnik

Planetnik is a modern, domain-friendly spelling of the Polish word Płanetnik. It is not about planets. It is about the sky, clouds, storms and local weather observation.

Why “Planetnik”?

We use the form without the Polish character because it works better in domains, e-mail addresses, system configuration and international communication. The name is still rooted in the Polish Płanetnik.

Why not planets?

The old Polish word płaneta meant a cloud, especially a storm cloud. Płanetnik was therefore connected with clouds and weather, not astronomy.

Who was Płanetnik?

In Polish folk tradition, Płanetnik was a figure associated with weather: clouds, rain, hail and storms. In folk stories, Płanetnik could guide clouds, bring rain or drive bad weather away. Related names include chmurnik and obłocznik.

For our project, Płanetnik becomes a symbol of modern community sky observation: instead of folk powers, we use sensors, data, maps and local warning.

How does the name connect to the project?

Planetnik is intended to become a network of local StormNode devices that observe storm activity, collect weather data and help build a local picture of what is happening above a given area.

In one sentence
